Greenfield Sacks Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition, Leslie Sacks: Collection of an Art Dealer. Curated by long-time Los Angeles art dealer and gallery owner Leslie Sacks, this exhibition is comprised of vignettes, which represent his style and artistic preferences. The show will feature works ranging from Classical to Contemporary in a variety of media; prints, drawings, paintings and sculpture, including works by Richard Diebenkorn, Jim Dine, David Hockney, Pablo Picasso, Marino Marini, Henri Matisse, Henry Moore, Larry Rivers, Maurice de Vlaminck as well as Chinese ceramics and African tribal art.

Leslie Sacks’ approach to collecting is one that explores a variety of world cultures. He appreciates each for its unique qualities, while taking pleasure in the universality and the humanity of the art. Despite the range of purpose and functionality of the art, this visual expression binds these cultures together over time, geographical and cultural differences. The great influence of other world cultures on Western art is evident throughout Sacks’ collection. For centuries the “Venus”
has been a central theme in art. Though Jim Dine and Hellenistic
Greece could not be further from one another in time, their
common veneration and Dine’s subsequent re-appropriation of
the “Venus” figure invariably connects them. Similarly, the African
tribal works featured in this exhibition, such as the Nigerian Ibo
Mask, were of great influence among Modern painters in France such as Picasso and Matisse.

Leslie Sacks has been collecting art for nearly four decades, beginning in the early 1970's in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was Sacks’ passion for collecting that motivated his entry into art dealing, which he viewed as a way of expanding his collection. In 1981 Leslie Sacks opened his first gallery in Johannesburg- later opening Lelie Sacks Fine Art, Los Angeles in 1991. In 2006 he joined forces with Bobbie Greenfield Gallery establishing Greenfield Sacks Gallery.
